Smart Device Manager

OVERVIEW

Smart Device Manager (SDM) is mobile phone software that helps power two family safety services on the Sprint Network: Drive First and Mobile Controls. These services allow parents to set up children’s phones so that they automatically lock when driving or to prevent phone usage during school hours.

ACTIVE ONLY ON OPT-IN

When a phone pre-loaded with SDM is first turned on, it registers itself as having this capability. The app’s features only become active if a customer signs up for one of these services. The app never collects any information from the phone without the explicit permission of the parent, and this can be revoked at any time.

LIMITED PHONE IMPACT

Location Labs has designed the app to make sure it’s as small and impact-free as possible. Unless a customer signs up for one these Sprint services, SDM will not consume battery, memory, or any other phone resources. It’s only 600kb in size (about the same size as wallpaper images that come pre-installed on phones).

UPDATE NOTIFICATIONS

From time to time, Location Labs updates SDM to improve the experience for Drive First and Mobile Controls customers. If a customer is not a subscriber to one of these services SDM should not need to update, but recent Google changes (from Android Market to Google Play) have unintentionally triggered these updates.

We are working with Google to address this notification issue. In the meantime, it’s OK to simply clear the notification and ignore the update request. If customers update the app, it will not subscribe them to any of these services, and the notification to update will disappear.
